Paris – 23.06.2026: Marc Bloch, an important historian of the 20th century and hero of the Résistance movement, today together with his wife Simonne Vidal was solemnly inducted into the Panthéon. This honoring ceremony aims to recognize both his intellectual legacy and his courageous resistance against National Socialism.
Marc Bloch, born in 1886, was a pioneer of modern historiography and co-founder of the influential journal “Annales d’histoire économique et sociale.” His works, including “La société féodale” and “L’étrange défaite,” have had a profound impact on the field of history.
During World War II, Bloch actively participated in the resistance against the German occupation. In March 1944, he was arrested by the Vichy police and brutally tortured during detention. Despite enduring all tortures, he did not divulge any information. On June 16, 1944, he was executed by the Gestapo.
On the occasion of his induction into the Panthéon, a documentary titled “Marc Bloch, au nom de la France” was premiered. The film, written and directed by Hugues Nancy, portrays the extraordinary life and dedication of Marc Bloch and his wife Simonne Vidal. The film uses extensive archival material, including photos, diaries, and manuscripts, to tell the story of this remarkable couple.
The Marc Bloch family initially expressed concern that his legacy might be exploited for political purposes. They emphasized the importance of purely civic recognition and wished for the broad academic community to participate in the ceremony. These wishes were respected, and the event took place without the presence of the far-right National Front.
The induction of Marc Bloch and Simonne Vidal into the Panthéon is an important event honoring the values of the Republic and reminding us of the dedication to freedom and justice. It highlights the importance of historical memory and the recognition of those who fought for democracy.
For those interested, the exhibition “Marc Bloch, l’esprit de l’Histoire” will be displayed at the Panthéon from June 25, 2026 to January 10, 2027. The exhibition offers insightful perspectives on the life and career of this outstanding historian.
Today’s ceremony was presided over by President Emmanuel Macron, who emphasized the importance of Marc Bloch for French history and culture. He affirmed that Bloch is honored for his work, teachings, and courage.
The induction of Marc Bloch and Simonne Vidal into the Panthéon is a well-deserved recognition of their outstanding lives and contributions to French history. It reminds us of the importance of resistance against oppression and the defense of democratic values.
