Menus conceal puzzles, ingredients become clues, and invitations become instruments of discreet influence. Franceinfo has now covered the book, which was published in May, drawing renewed attention to an unusual combination: Hammani intertwines the spy novel and geopolitical thriller with the sensual world of gastronomy.

At the center is Mark Marx, a young chef who travels extensively and is recruited by the mysterious X Company. From then on, he moves between the kitchens of grand hotels and the scenes of diplomatic crises. His knives are both tools of the trade and camouflage. The novel plays with the idea that a carefully composed meal can open doors that remain closed to official negotiators.

Hammani relies on a blend of action, love story, and international intrigue. At Marx’s side is Assia, and for a long time it remains unclear whether she is an ally or a threat. The plot draws part of its tension from this uncertainty. At the same time, the author does not treat the culinary motif as mere decoration for a conventional spy story.

Rather, gastronomy takes on its own narrative function. Cooking stands for memory, origin, and understanding, but can also serve deception or manipulation. In this world, a shared dinner becomes a diplomatic gesture and a test of the other person. Hammani’s professional experience in high-end hospitality gives the settings a tangible texture: kitchens appear as strictly organized workplaces where attentiveness, timing, and discretion matter.

Particularly idiosyncratic is the recipe section. The printed edition contains 43 dishes from different countries. They do not sit alongside the novel like a pleasing appendix, but instead reflect its international journey. The 366-page book was published on 15 May 2026 by Marx & Co. The foreword was written by Guillaume Gomez, the former head chef of the Elysee Palace and current representative of French gastronomy. His involvement suits a novel that understands cuisine as a cultural practice with political reach.

“Les Secrets du Chef” is therefore neither a cookbook with a plot inserted into it nor a spy thriller to which a few recipes have been added.
