Massive Protests in Geneva Against G7 Summit in Évian

Geneva – 06/14/2026: On June 14, 2026, thousands of people took to the streets in Geneva to protest the upcoming G7 Summit in Évian-les-Bains, France. The “No-G7” coalition, an alliance of over 60 organizations from various social sectors, had planned the protests. The rally took place under high security measures and proceeded peacefully.

The demonstrators initially gathered in Mon Repos Park and then marched through central streets of the city. With signs such as “No to G7 and imperialist alliances” or “Abolish Instead of Endure,” they sent a clear message against the policies of the G7 countries. Despite the clear criticism, no incidents occurred.

Security measures in Geneva were comprehensive and elaborate. Around 7,400 security personnel were deployed, including members of the cantonal police, reinforcements from other Swiss cantons, and about 4,000 army soldiers. Businesses in the city center secured their facades with plywood to prevent damage from possible riots.

The “No-G7” coalition sharply criticized the severe security measures. They called the measures a “security bubble” imposed without public debate. Additionally, they accused the government of restricting freedom of expression.

The G7 Summit, taking place from June 15 to 17, 2026, in Évian-les-Bains, is causing international tensions. In addition to France, Switzerland has also undertaken extensive security efforts to prevent protests and possible incidents. In Geneva, several border crossings were temporarily closed, public places such as parks were cordoned off, and public transport was adjusted to facilitate control.

The cooperation between France and Switzerland is strained. Switzerland complained about the unilateral organization of the summit by France without consultation. Apparently, this led to a confidential letter from Swiss Federal President Guy Parmelin to French President Emmanuel Macron, in which Parmelin expressed his criticism of the summit planning.

During the summit, the “No-G7” coalition plans further actions to underline its demands for a fairer world order and its criticism of the G7 countries’ imperialistic structures. The movement opposes economic and political decisions it deems unjust and capitalist.

The situation in Geneva remains tense. Authorities announced they will maintain security measures during the summit to ensure public order and prevent potential conflicts early. Further demonstrations are expected.

These protests reflect growing skepticism toward the G7 countries, which have for decades seen themselves as leading Western industrial nations coordinating global political, economic, and security issues. The criticism from civil society is mainly directed at social inequalities, environmental damages, and concentrations of power that are believed to be promoted by their policies.

Thus, the G7 Summit once again sparks intense debates about international cooperation, global responsibility, and the future shaping of the world order – topics that also gain visibility through the protests in Geneva.
