Ales – 21.07.2026: The mayor of Ales, Christophe Rivenq, was taken from the vicinity of his home by officers from the Raid special unit during the night leading into Tuesday. The reason was a tip-off about a possibly rigged vehicle near his house. According to consistent media reports, Rivenq was taken to a secure location. Official confirmation that an explosive device was actually found was not initially available.
The operation took place a few days after death threats against the local politician in the Gard department. On July 16, threatening graffiti was discovered at his home. In addition, his wife found an envelope containing two nine-millimeter rounds in the mailbox. The unidentified authors referred to the name DZ Mafia New Generation.
Christophe Rivenq has led the city of Ales since March 2025 and was re-elected on March 28, 2026. Following the previously reported threats, he publicly stated that he would not allow himself to be intimidated. The incidents targeted him as mayor while also affecting his private surroundings. Security measures were therefore stepped up again following the latest developments.
According to local reports, the investigation into the threats is being handled by the JIRS interregional specialized prosecution office in Marseille. It is responsible for complex organized crime cases. Investigators are examining who made the graffiti and left the envelope. Whether the perpetrators actually have connections to a criminal group has not yet been conclusively established.
The tip-off about a possible explosive vehicle significantly escalated the situation during the night. The security forces in charge acted as a precaution and removed the mayor from the danger area. No reliable official details have been released about the exact location of the operation, possible cordons, or technical examinations. There is also no confirmed information on possible suspects so far.
The city of Ales is located in the north of the Gard department and is part of the Occitanie region. In recent months, police and judicial authorities in the area have repeatedly investigated suspected drug-trafficking networks. The current threats against the mayor are therefore being treated by authorities as a serious matter, although the background has not yet been fully clarified.
For Rivenq, the security situation remains tense for the time being. The key question will be whether the investigation can substantiate the tip-off about the vehicle and whether a link to the earlier threats can be established. Until then, the protection of the mayor and his family remains the priority. The investigation is ongoing.
