Mayor of Verquin attacked: Three people arrested

Verquin – 05/08/2026: In the northern French municipality of Verquin, Mayor Sylvie Bauvais-Tassez has reportedly been attacked, according to authorities. Three people were arrested in connection with the incident. The investigation covers suspected insulting of a public official, property damage and violence against an elected municipal representative. Authorities initially provided no further details about the precise course of events.

Verquin is located in the Pas-de-Calais department, west of Lens and near Bethune. Bauvais-Tassez has headed the town hall since March 20, 2026. The attack therefore occurred only a few months after she took office. As of Wednesday, it was not known whether those arrested remained in police custody, whether they were represented by lawyers or whether they had commented on the allegations.

The stated allegations cover several possible acts, the circumstances of which must be investigated separately. Insulting a public official can include derogatory remarks directed at a person in the exercise of their public office. The allegation of property damage requires damage to property belonging to another person. In the case of the alleged violence, investigators must in particular clarify the nature and severity of the attack as well as the respective role of those involved.

The arrests do not constitute a finding of guilt. The further proceedings will depend on witness statements, possible video footage, available evidence and the statements of those involved. On this basis, the competent public prosecutor’s office will decide on the next steps. The names of the three people were not released.
