Monaco: Package bomb seriously injures Ukrainian businessman Vadim Ermolaev

Monaco – 01.07.2026: An explosion in a residential complex in the Monegasque district of Les Moulins injured three people on the evening of June 29. According to security authorities, an improvised package was left in the stairwell and detonated when residents returned. Among the injured is 58-year-old Ukrainian businessman Vadim Ermolaev; he and his partner suffered severe injuries, and their minor son also received medical treatment. Investigators believe the explosive device was deliberately placed and are investigating it as an attempted attack.

Monaco – 01.07.2026: The Sûreté publique cordoned off the scene extensively, and explosive ordnance experts examined residues at the site. The head of government of the princely administration, Minister of State Christophe Mirmand, described the incident as a serious security event and announced close coordination with French services. Because of the proximity to the border, rescue teams from the Alpes-Maritimes department assisted in treating the wounded; two people were taken to regional clinics.

Monaco – 01.07.2026: French and Monegasque media consistently identified the seriously injured man as Vadim Ermolaev, a businessman known in Ukraine who has for some time lived on the Côte d’Azur and in Monaco. Investigators said they are examining several scenarios – from a personal feud to a politically motivated act. No concrete indications about perpetrators have been released so far. The public prosecutor asked for restraint regarding speculation and announced that interim findings will be communicated only through official channels.

Monaco – 01.07.2026: The incident draws attention to the presence of wealthy exiles from Ukraine on the Côte d’Azur. In reporting the term “Bataillon Monaco” is sometimes used; it informally describes a group of émigrés but is not an official designation. Authorities emphasize that the current case must be assessed individually. Regardless, the Princely Palace, according to media reports, ordered a review of security arrangements in residential buildings housing high-profile residents. Prince Albert II expressed his sympathy and thanked emergency and rescue personnel.

Monaco – 01.07.2026: Temporary access restrictions were imposed around the scene for residents, and parts of the building remain closed until forensic work is completed. The police set up a portal for tips. Official information on the health status of the injured remains preliminary; authorities said they will release further details only after the situation stabilizes. International media are following the case closely, but reliable information on motive and responsibility is not yet available.
