Murder Case Christiane Commeau: Anonymous Letters Lead to Reopening of Investigation

Chassieu – 13.06.2026: Over two decades after the violent death of Christiane Commeau near Lyon, there are new developments in the case. The 54-year-old woman vanished without a trace from her apartment in Chassieu in October 2004. It was only in February 2005 that her body was found in a forest near Niévroz, département Ain. Investigations revealed that she had been killed by two shots to the neck. Despite extensive inquiries, both the perpetrator and the motive remained unknown for a long time.

At the end of 2025, two women in Voiron, about 70 kilometers from Chassieu, received anonymous letters. The mailings contained excerpts from novels in the “San-Antonio” series, along with handwritten notes referring to key life dates and events of Christiane Commeau. One of the messages read: “What are you doing on Monday, the 30th of September?” These clues led authorities to suspect that the sender had personal information about the victim.

Based on these new leads, the Paris Public Prosecutor’s Office in Nanterre, which operates a special unit for unsolved cases, reopened the cold case in autumn 2025. The investigation had previously been closed in 2015. Investigators now hope to identify the perpetrator with the fresh information.

In June 2026, the case was again brought to public attention on television: In the program “Appel à témoins” on M6, viewers were urged to provide relevant information to help solve the murder of Christiane Commeau. Particular focus was placed on the fact that the anonymous letters suggested a connection between the sender and the victim.

Christiane Commeau’s family expressed relief over the reopening of the investigation. They have been demanding clarity and a just resolution of the case for years. The relatives are appealing to the public to share any information that could contribute to solving the crime.

Despite the long wait and difficult investigations, the murder remains unsolved. Investigators continue to rely on public assistance and potential new leads to shed light on the mysterious crime. The Christiane Commeau case thus remains a central concern for the French judiciary and the affected families.

The role of the anonymous letters with literary references represents an unusual aspect that has reignited public interest in the case. Whether these clues will indeed lead to identifying the perpetrator remains to be seen in the coming months.
