Moselle: Shelter-in-Place Order Lifted After Fire in Gandrange

Gandrange – 02.08.2026: Following a fire at an industrial waste storage facility in Gandrange, in the Moselle department, the prefecture lifted the shelter-in-place order for around 30,000 people on Sunday evening. Due to heavy smoke, residents of the affected localities had previously been asked to remain in their homes. A few hours later, the authorities gave the all-clear: people were able to leave their homes again.

The fire broke out at an operating site assigned to the company SUEZ Alternative Fuels & Energies. The facility is located on the grounds of the former Gandrange steelworks and is listed in official environmental records as a lower-tier Seveso establishment. Among other activities, non-hazardous, non-inert waste is stored and processed there. The Seveso classification requires operators and authorities to take special precautions in risk prevention, monitoring and emergency planning.

However, the classification alone does not indicate which substances burned in the fire or whether substances hazardous to health were released. No information on air-quality measurements, the cause of the fire or the extent of the damage was initially available on Sunday evening. Authorities had also not reported any injuries by that time. The lifting of the shelter-in-place order suggests that they no longer believed there was an acute danger; however, this does not constitute a final assessment of possible residues.

The precautionary area extended far beyond Gandrange. The municipality itself has around 3,000 residents, but the order affected roughly ten times as many people. This is explained by the dense population of the industrial and residential areas in the Fensch and Moselle valleys. In a fire at a waste facility, the reach and direction of a smoke plume depend, among other things, on wind, weather conditions and the burning material. Authorities may therefore include more distant municipalities as a precaution before reliable measurement data are available.

With the immediate danger over, attention is turning to the technical and administrative follow-up. It remains to be determined where the fire started, which materials were affected and whether operational safety measures were observed. Investigations into firefighting water, deposits and possible residues may also be required. According to the available official information, the site was last inspected by the competent environmental inspectorate in September 2025.

For the public, the prefecture’s clearance remains in effect for now. Should measurements or investigations make further precautionary measures necessary, the responsible authorities would have to provide separate information. The official update published on Sunday evening was limited to lifting the shelter-in-place order for around 30,000 people.
