Bouches-du-Rhône – 02.07.2026: In the early hours of Thursday morning, residents in parts of the department took stock of the destruction after a night of fires. In several communes north of Marseille, houses were damaged, vehicles destroyed and large areas of vegetation burned. Many of those affected report sleepless hours and a mixture of relief and disbelief now that the flames have been pushed back in many places.

The previous evening saw hectic evacuations. Families packed the essentials, neighbors knocked on doors, and pets were secured in haste. Assembly points and emergency shelters were opened; in a municipal cultural center, helpers temporarily took people in, distributed water and organized places to rest. Authorities warned of smoke exposure and urged people to keep windows closed and to keep access routes clear for emergency vehicles.

The fire brigades reported in the morning that two of the largest fires were under control, while another north of Marseille was still being fought. According to consistent media reports, hundreds of personnel were deployed, including the Marins-pompiers and specialized ground teams, supported by firefighting vehicles and aerial resources as soon as conditions allowed. The priority was the protection of human life, residential neighborhoods and critical infrastructure.

The prefecture set up a situation center and is coordinating evacuations, closures and information channels. Météo-France had previously warned of heat and strong winds – a dangerous mix that favors flying sparks and rapid spread. Authorities appealed to strictly avoid open fires and to postpone work at the edges of vegetation. Even seemingly small embers can ignite new fires in windy conditions.

Those affected describe material losses and psychological strain: some houses are uninhabitable, others heavily affected by soot and heat. Municipalities and aid organizations are supporting with accommodation, hot drinks during the night, initial psychosocial care as well as information on insurance and damage reports. Official figures on destroyed buildings and burned area are currently being compiled; reliable tallies are expected after the first securing operations are completed.

The fire brigades and the judiciary are investigating the cause of the fires. At present, both negligence and technical triggers are being considered; conclusive findings are not yet available. Emergency services are cautious about providing figures on injuries and damage sums in order to avoid rumors. Fire watches will remain in sensitive zones for the coming days; the population is asked to avoid cordoned-off areas, to call emergency numbers only in cases of acute danger and to report any signs of new smoke immediately.
