Naval Group in Lorient: shipyard bets on a new series of frigates

Lorient – 14 July 2026: A report published on Monday draws attention to Naval Group’s tightly guarded site in Lorient. Surface ships and highly specialized systems for the French Navy, as well as for foreign customers, are built there. The visit demonstrates the industrial importance of the shipyard in Brittany for France’s defense industry and the group’s order book.

The focus is on the Defense and Intervention Frigate series, abbreviated FDI. On 31 March 2026, the French procurement agency DGA ordered the fifth unit of this type for the Marine nationale. The order for the fourth frigate had already been placed in December 2025. Both additional ships will be built in Lorient, expanding the national program to five units.

Together with four FDI frigates for Greece, the current series comprises nine ships. The facility thus combines orders for the French armed forces with an important export program. Naval Group describes the FDI as a multi-purpose ocean-going frigate that can be used, among other things, against threats above and below water, as well as against air and asymmetric attacks.

The first French FDI, Amiral Ronarc’h, was delivered to the Marine nationale on 17 October 2025. According to the Ministry of Defense, further deliveries are planned between 2027 and 2032. The latest order therefore provides several years of predictability for the design, outfitting, and integration of mission and combat systems at the Lorient site.

The report also points to the large number of employees working in protected production areas. Naval Group combines the development, design, and construction of surface ships in Lorient, as well as the integration of complex onboard equipment. This includes sensor systems, communications, electronic warfare, and weapons. Industrial activity therefore extends far beyond the construction of ship hulls.

With regard to submarines, however, it is important to distinguish the geographical locations: French nuclear-powered attack submarines of the Barracuda program are built in Cherbourg, not Lorient. On 26 June 2026, the DGA reported the delivery of the fourth boat, De Grasse, to the Marine nationale. Lorient and Cherbourg thus represent different but closely interconnected areas of the French naval industry.

For Naval Group, public attention comes at a time of high workload. The group is working simultaneously on new ships for national requirements, Greek frigates, and other international projects. The FDI orders underscore that the shipyard in Lorient is not only a regional employer, but also remains a key site for France’s maritime defense capability and the export of defense technologies.
