Nazaré Returns to the Spotlight of Surfing with Giant Waves

Nazaré – 16/07/2026: A recent report by the French broadcaster Franceinfo focuses on Nazaré, the Portuguese coastal town internationally known for exceptionally high Atlantic waves. The focus is on Praia do Norte, north of the town center. When weather conditions are right, powerful swells encounter particular conditions on the seabed there. The area attracts experienced surfers from numerous countries, including athletes from France.

The reason for the large waves lies in the Nazaré Canyon. This underwater canyon extends close to the coast and alters incoming swells from the west. According to the Portuguese tourism authority, the canyon can be up to 5,000 meters deep; its structure concentrates and amplifies wave energy. This creates conditions off Praia do Norte that differ significantly from those at many other beaches along Portugal’s west coast.

Nazaré’s waves are not always the same height. Wind, currents, tides and the strength of the Atlantic swell are among the decisive factors. Particularly impressive conditions are generally observed during the stormier season. In summer, the town remains a destination for water sports and coastal tourism, but the extreme waves for which Nazaré became famous depend on rare and difficult-to-predict combinations of conditions.

For professional big-wave surfing, Praia do Norte is therefore no ordinary surf spot. The Portuguese tourism authority notes that the beach is unsupervised and that the rough sea can be dangerous for swimmers. Surfers who take on large waves there usually work with safety teams, watercraft and close monitoring of weather and sea conditions. Surfing such waves requires special experience and coordinated rescue procedures.

Nazaré gained additional worldwide attention when Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara rode an approximately 30-meter wave there in November 2011. The ride was honored at the Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards at the time and shaped the town’s international image. However, the height of individual waves is difficult to compare depending on the measurement method and assessment. What is certain is that Nazaré is among the most prominent venues in big-wave surfing.

The town benefits economically from its fame far beyond the narrower circle of elite sport. Spectators, media representatives, photographers and travelers visit the cliffs and viewpoints around Fort São Miguel Arcanjo, from which Praia do Norte can be viewed. In addition to surfing, fishing, gastronomy and traditional coastal culture remain important elements of Nazaré. Its tourist appeal thus combines a natural phenomenon, sport and the regional economy.

The new report from France shows above all why Nazaré holds a special attraction for European surfers: the town is relatively close to France, yet offers conditions that only a few stretches of coastline can produce in this form. Visitors should nevertheless distinguish between sightseeing tourism and high-risk sport. The immense surf is a spectacular natural phenomenon, but not an environment for unprepared water sports enthusiasts.
