Chicago – 06/18/2026: The Obama Presidential Center was officially opened today at John Lewis Plaza in Chicago’s Jackson Park. The ceremony, which was by invitation only, was broadcast live worldwide and kicked off an entire weekend of events surrounding the new center.
Highlights of the opening included performances by US music legends such as Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, and Christina Aguilera, as well as Bono and The Edge from U2. Additional artists like rapper Common, Eddie Vedder, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, Marc Anthony, Tems, and up-and-coming actress Marsai Martin enriched the program with musical contributions. The artistic diversity reflected the cultural aspirations of the center and emphasized its significance as a new cultural and political hub.
Alongside these stars, former US Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton were present as guests of honor. Former President Donald Trump, who had publicly criticized the $850 million project beforehand, did not attend the ceremony.
The Obama Presidential Center was developed on an almost 20-hectare site in the south of Chicago, close to Barack Obama’s former residence. The site includes a museum documenting Obama’s political and personal career, a branch of the Chicago Public Library, sports facilities, and diverse recreational areas. Visiting the museum is only possible with pre-booked, timed tickets, which are currently sold out.
The Obama Foundation, led by Valerie Jarrett, pursues the goal with the center to promote civic engagement and inspire people to commit to positive societal change. The center is expected to attract over one million visitors annually and serve as a meeting place for learning, community, and inspiration.
The grand opening weekend continues on June 19, when the center will be open to the public. In addition to further musical performances, family-friendly programs, culinary events, art presentations, and storytelling sessions are planned to offer visitors a varied experience.
The Obama Presidential Center positions itself as a place of hope and change, inviting people from all walks of life to be motivated by the history and values of the Obamas. The celebrations and public opening send a clear signal of the lasting impact Barack Obama wishes to leave behind.
For those who cannot attend in person, broadcasts of the opening ceremony are available on the Obama Foundation’s website and social media channels.
