Paris: Mayor Grégoire announces a decision on school schedules by the end of 2026

Paris – 10 July 2026: Paris Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire said on Friday that the city administration will adopt a binding position by the end of 2026 on reorganising school schedules in the capital. The municipal decision is expected to be made one year before possible implementation; the change would therefore be prepared for the start of classes in September 2027.

Grégoire justified the timetable by citing the complexity of responsibilities: while the Ministry of Education sets national calendars and curricula, the city is responsible for the operation of extracurricular services and the organisation of care offerings before and after classes. Before any structural change, consultations with schools, parent representatives, educational staff and external stakeholders are therefore necessary.

The initiative is based on the possible reintroduction of the four-day week and the recommendation of a citizens’ convention established by the city on “Children’s Time”. The convention partly called for modified working and care schedules; it had been established in response to scandals and shortcomings in extracurricular services. At the same time, Grégoire stressed that short-term operational measures for the safety and oversight of services take priority.

Politically, the decision is sensitive: changes to schedules affect parents’ daily lives, care services for workers and the organisation of municipal work. In the council debate at the Conseil de Paris, both opposition forces and social education associations and trade unions are likely to play a role. Right-wing forces have already called for transparent reviews and parliamentary or municipal commissions of inquiry.

At the national level, the government sets the regulatory framework and the school calendar; the decree on planning the 2026–2027 school year has already been published. Within this framework, a city such as Paris can define the structure of the day, longer or shorter breaks and the organisation of extracurricular services, but must clarify financial and staffing issues relevant to implementation by 2027.

For parents and local administrators, the central question remains how to ensure reliable and affordable care outside school hours without compromising the quality of teaching. Grégoire announced that he will present the results of the reviews and consultations before the end of the year, so that the Conseil de Paris can potentially discuss concrete resolutions.

The announcement marks the start of an intensified debate on time structures in Parisian schools; it links local organisation to national guidelines and affects daily life, the labour market and municipal finances alike.
