Paris postpones Pride parade due to extreme heatwave

The Pride parade planned for Saturday in Paris has been postponed at short notice. The reason is the exceptional heatwave that has gripped France firmly for days. The organizers announced the decision on Friday after the Paris police prefecture recommended a postponement. Given the extreme temperatures and the strained healthcare system, holding the large-scale event was considered too risky.

According to authorities, an exceptional heatwave has been ongoing since June 21, placing heavy stress on emergency services and hospitals. Under these conditions, an event with several hundred thousand participants would have posed significant health risks. Particularly, prolonged stays in direct sunlight and large crowds could have led to numerous emergencies.

The police prefecture had made it clear to organizers of large events in Paris that a voluntary cancellation or postponement was expected. Otherwise, the authorities would have banned the events by decree. The aim of the measure is to ensure public safety and to avoid putting additional strain on already heavily burdened emergency personnel.

The restrictions affect not only the Pride parade. The well-known music festival Solidays, the athletics meeting at Stade Charléty, as well as several other sports and cultural events, had to adjust or postpone their programs. Although this is disappointing for many visitors, understanding predominates given the weather situation. Health comes first – that’s sometimes just that simple.

France is currently experiencing one of the most severe heat periods in recent years. The highest heat warning level and extensive protective measures still apply in 61 départements. Especially vulnerable are older people, children, and those with pre-existing conditions. Authorities therefore urge people to avoid physical exertion as much as possible, drink plenty of water, and stay in cool rooms during the hottest hours of the day.

At least some relief is in sight. From the weekend, temperatures are expected to slowly decrease first in western France before the cooling gradually spreads to other parts of the country. When the Paris Pride parade will be rescheduled is not yet known. The organizers intend to announce a new date as soon as the weather conditions and safety requirements allow the event to take place again.
