Patrick Bruel accused of sexual assault – his lawyer denies the accusations

Paris – 12.06.2026 : Patrick Bruel, the famous French singer and actor, is being prosecuted on serious charges. After 48 hours in custody, the sexagenarian appeared before several investigating judges on June 10, 2026, in Nanterre. He is suspected of rape, attempted rape, sexual coercion, as well as sexual harassment. The accusations relate to alleged incidents that occurred between 2008 and 2019, not only in France but also in Belgium and Switzerland.

Bruel denies all allegations and has been released under strict conditions. These include travel restrictions, a prohibition on any contact with the alleged victims, an obligation to undergo psychological treatment, as well as a bail deposit of 500,000 euros. Other investigations are ongoing, including into older allegations that may be time-barred.

Bruel’s lawyer, Myriam Guedj Benayoun, stated that her client rejects all charges and is determined to prove his innocence. She also emphasized that the investigating judges’ decision to release Bruel under strict conditions despite the seriousness of the facts sends a message to victims of sexual assault who are often ignored.

The charges cover several cases: notably an alleged rape in 2008 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, an attempted rape in 2010 in Brussels, as well as acts of sexual coercion and harassment in 2019 in Perpignan and Ajaccio. Bruel is also involved as a “witness assisted” in four other investigations, which means he is not being prosecuted in these cases but is involved in the investigations.

The public reaction to these allegations is very sensitive. Bruel, who achieved great success in the 1980s and 1990s with songs such as “Casser la voix” and “Place des grands hommes,” has already canceled all scheduled concerts in France and internationally for the coming months. He wishes to devote himself fully to the judicial proceedings.

In recent years, the French judiciary has intensified its fight against sexual assaults, especially in the cultural and entertainment sectors. The #MeToo movement has played an important role in giving courage to many victims to report and legally pursue these acts. The investigations against Bruel take place in this societal context and raise questions about power relations as well as the handling of assaults in the entertainment industry.

French authorities have announced that they will give the highest priority to these investigations in order to deliver justice both to the alleged victims and to the accused. The development of this media case remains to be closely followed both in the cultural sector and in public opinion.
