Patrouille de France Flew Over New York for the 250th Anniversary of American Independence

New York – 06/09/2026: On the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence, the French aerobatic team Patrouille de France performed an impressive flyover of the Statue of Liberty in New York on June 9, 2026. Eight Alphajet aircraft flew in perfect formation over the famous landmark, which was erected in 1886 as a gift from France to the USA. The planes left smoke trails in the colors of the French tricolor flag.

The flyover is part of the “Liberté 250” mission, which honors the 250-year friendship and partnership between France and the United States. Earlier, the Patrouille de France flew over the West Point Military Academy — a symbol of the military cooperation between the two countries. From New York, the squadron continued its route to Philadelphia, the city where the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776.

The “Liberté 250” mission runs from June 8 to July 4, 2026, and includes various flyovers and air shows along the U.S. East Coast. In addition to New York, the program includes Washington D.C., Baltimore, and Ocean City. The goal of the event is to celebrate the longstanding friendship and demonstrate the excellence of the French Air Force.

For French journalist Alexandra Lay, who reports on defense matters for France TV, participating on board an Alphajet was a unique experience. To withstand the intense G-forces during the flight, she underwent special tests and had to increase her weight. She described the flight as “extraordinary” and a “once-in-a-lifetime adventure.”

The Patrouille de France was founded in 1953 and is the official aerobatic display team of the French Air Force. It is known for its precise formations and spectacular maneuvers and regularly performs at national and international events. It stands for the high quality and heritage of French aviation.

The celebrations for the 250th anniversary offer an opportunity to highlight shared values of freedom and democracy and to emphasize the close relationship between France and the USA. The participation of the Patrouille de France in the event demonstrates the deep transatlantic connection between the two nations.

The “Liberté 250” mission will feature additional highlights, including flyovers of historic sites and challenging airshows that celebrate the shared history and friendship. For the participating pilots and companions, this mission is an expression of historical ties and ongoing cooperation between France and the United States.
