Philippe Brun positions himself for the 2027 presidential election

Paris – 05/08/2026: Socialist MP Philippe Brun spoke on Franceinfo on Wednesday morning about wildfires, foreign interference and the 2027 presidential election. The representative for the fourth constituency in the Eure department is seeking the nomination in an internal primary of the Parti socialiste (PS). In doing so, he links current crises with his party’s strategic repositioning.

Brun announced his bid at the end of June. He wants to give the PS a stronger social and workers’ rights profile and is regarded in the National Assembly as a skilled budget policy specialist. He has represented Eure in parliament since 2022 and was re-elected in 2024. His candidacy expands the field of socialist contenders at a time when the French left is still debating its process and political direction.

The first round of the presidential election is scheduled for 18 April 2027, with the runoff set for 2 May. There is currently no agreement within the left-wing camp on a joint selection process. The PS is preparing to make a decision within the social democratic spectrum; other parties and movements are considering broader alliances or independent candidacies. Behind the question of personnel lies a dispute over direction: should the PS sharpen its own profile or join a broader left-wing alliance at an early stage?

Foreign interference is likely to receive particular attention during the campaign. On 11 June, Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu met with parties to discuss better protection of democratic debate against manipulation from abroad. The issues discussed included expedited judicial procedures during campaign periods and tougher criminal penalties.

A decree of 22 July also created an independent commission intended to inform the public and candidates about foreign interference in electoral processes. The body includes representatives of the Conseil d’Etat, the Court of Audit and the Court of Cassation. Its reports are intended to make state findings on coordinated influence and disinformation campaigns easier to understand, without directing political competition itself.

By addressing wildfires, Brun also took up an acute domestic issue of the summer. In rural constituencies, fires and preventive fire protection directly affect agriculture, municipal infrastructure, and the operational capacity of firefighters and civil protection services. For presidential candidates, the debate offers an opportunity to explain their views on state preparedness and support for municipalities.

Brun’s appearance thus marks an early step in the long election campaign. Before the first round, the PS must determine which candidate, which social programme and which relationship with the other forces of the left it will pursue. So far, it is clear that Brun wants to help shape that decision as a candidate.
