Controversy over the cancelled Queen tribute concert in Orange

Orange – 19 July 2026: In the vast semicircular auditorium of the Ancient Theatre of Orange, the music of Queen was due to ring out on 4 September. Now the concert “Queen Forever” has been cancelled. The decision by the municipal administration has sparked a cultural policy debate in the southern French municipality and has meanwhile also involved the courts.

Mayor Jean-Dominique Artaud, together with his municipal administration, confirmed the cancellation of the event. Artaud was elected mayor in March 2026 on a Rassemblement National list. According to the producer, the municipality cited financial considerations as the reason for cancelling the event. Initially, no public breakdown of the costs related to the cancellation was available.

The British band itself was not scheduled to perform; rather, a major tribute to its repertoire was planned. According to producer David Hardit, around 600 volunteer singers were expected to take part in the evening. For many of them, it would have been a performance against the historic backdrop of the Roman theatre, considered one of the city’s most representative cultural venues.

Hardit rejects the financial justification and, according to his statements, has appealed the decision. He intends to have the cancellation reviewed by the administrative court. On Sunday, it was still unclear whether the court would intervene quickly or uphold the city’s decision. No date for an initial ruling has been made public so far.

This is therefore not merely about a single concert evening. Organizers, volunteer participants, and potential spectators must now contend with uncertainty as to whether the project can still take place. For the already planned procedures, rehearsals, and technical preparations, the cancellation represents a major setback. Initially, no information was published about possible compensation or refunds.

With its decision, the city of Orange is under particular scrutiny, as cultural programs at the tradition-rich theatre receive attention far beyond the municipality. The dispute combines questions concerning the municipal budget with the fundamental question of how far a new city administration may intervene in already prepared cultural events.

From a legal perspective, pending any possible court decision, only the following applies: the concert on Friday, 4 September 2026, is cancelled. The producer’s allegations and the city’s justification remain at odds. Whether the cancellation was lawful and whether “Queen Forever” can return in another form will now depend on further statements from the parties involved and the proceedings before the administrative court.
