Controversy over the cancellation of a Queen tribute concert in Orange

Orange – 19 July 2026: In the vast semicircular auditorium of the Ancient Theatre of Orange, Queen’s music was due to resound on 4 September. The “Queen Forever” concert has now been cancelled. The municipality’s decision has sparked a cultural policy debate in this town in southern France—and it is now also before the courts.

Mayor Jean-Dominique Artaud, together with his municipal administration, confirmed the cancellation of the event. Artaud was elected mayor in March 2026 on a Rassemblement National list. According to the producer, the town’s financial considerations were cited to justify the cancellation. No public details of the costs associated with the cancellation were initially communicated.

This was not a performance by the British band itself, but a large-scale tribute to its repertoire. According to producer David Hardit, around 600 volunteer singers were due to take part in the evening. For many of them, it would have been an opportunity to perform against the historic backdrop of the Roman theatre, considered one of the city’s main cultural venues.

Hardit rejects the financial justification and says he has filed legal challenges against the decision. He wants the cancellation reviewed by the administrative court. On Sunday, it was still unclear whether the court would intervene quickly or uphold the city’s decision. No date for an initial ruling had been made public so far.

The issue is therefore not limited to a single concert evening. Organizers, volunteer participants and potential visitors must now face uncertainty as to whether the project can ultimately take place. For the already planned schedules, rehearsals and technical preparations, the cancellation represents a major disruption. No information on possible compensation or refunds had initially been published.

The city of Orange is receiving particular attention because of its decision, as the cultural programmes of this tradition-rich theatre are followed far beyond the municipality. The controversy links questions concerning the municipal budget with the fundamental question of how far a newly elected municipal administration can intervene in cultural events that have already been prepared.

Legally, only one thing applies until a possible court ruling: the concert on Friday, 4 September 2026, is cancelled. The producer’s allegations and the city’s justification coexist. Whether the cancellation was legal and whether “Queen Forever” can return in another form will now depend on further statements from those involved and the proceedings before the administrative court.
