Paris – 07.07.2026: The appeals chamber in Paris on Tuesday confirmed the conviction of Marine Le Pen in the proceedings concerning the employment of assistants in the European Parliament, triggering a new political confrontation. According to court sources, the decision includes criminal sanctions as well as a temporary restriction on eligibility to stand for election, which, depending on further legal developments, may be partly suspended on probation.
Clear reactions came immediately from the left opposition. Representatives of the Parti socialiste and La France Insoumise felt their criticism of the former practice of the Front National or the Rassemblement National confirmed. They demanded that the legal consequences be fully enforced and stressed the independence of the judiciary. Several deputies argued that the handling of public funds in the EU context requires strict transparency standards that must apply equally to all parties.
Assessments within the center-right conservative spectrum were mixed. Some voices urged not to exploit the verdict for partisan ends and pointed to the presumption of innocence as long as further legal remedies are possible. Others noted the long history of investigations and reviews in the affair and expressed understanding for the judges’ decision, without drawing immediate conclusions for the upcoming presidential campaign.
Within the Rassemblement National, the decision is prompting tactical considerations. Party sources say they want to clarify their positioning promptly. Party leader Jordan Bardella is considered a possible focal point in media reports for the case that Le Pen were to be prevented from running. Officially, reference was made to the coming days, in which committee meetings are expected and messaging is to be sharpened.
Legally, the case revolves around the alleged misuse of EU funds for staff whose work is said to have benefited the party organization rather than primarily parliamentary activity. Legal experts point out that restrictions on eligibility to stand for election in France usually only take full effect once a decision is final and binding. At the same time, a confirming appeals judgment can already have short-term political consequences, for example in candidate selection, campaign financing, or the public perception of integrity.
Marine Le Pen announced she would explain her further political plans that evening; scheduled TV appearances suggest a swift positioning. Regardless of the individual’s personal fate, the political class views the July 7, 2026 decision as another step in the judicial examination of party financing and conduct in office. For the beginning of the cycle toward the 2027 presidential election, the strategic question is whether the RN will opt for continuity or must initiate an orderly adjustment. Other parties will also adapt their campaign management to the changed environment – from issue emphasis to the selection of credible leading figures.
