France – 15 July 2026: Mosquitoes become a nuisance in many places during summer, especially near ponds, rain barrels or other water sources. Not only the choice of a spray is decisive. French health authorities recommend a combination of preventive measures, mechanical protection and targeted use of repellents. This is intended to reduce bites while also limiting the reproduction of insects around homes and holiday accommodations.
Removing breeding sites comes first. Even small amounts of standing water can be sufficient for egg laying. Saucers under flower pots, buckets, tarpaulins, gutters, children’s toys or open containers should therefore be emptied, cleaned or protected from rain regularly. Water reservoirs can be covered or secured with fine-mesh netting. These measures directly affect the developmental cycle of the larvae.
For personal protection, authorities recommend long, loose-fitting and preferably light-coloured clothing, as well as nets for windows and doors. Mosquito nets for prams and sleeping areas can also be useful. Fans can additionally help because they make it more difficult for the small insects to fly in. Such non-chemical measures are particularly important because they do not create any additional burden on indoor air or the environment.
Skin repellents can provide additional protection for uncovered parts of the body. Consumers should choose products intended for use against mosquitoes and carefully follow the instructions on the packaging or leaflet. This includes dosage, the maximum number of applications and possible restrictions for children, pregnant women or sensitive individuals. Repellent must not get into the eyes, onto mucous membranes or onto irritated skin.
The national food safety agency Anses points out that insecticides and repellents are biocides. Such products should only be used when they are genuinely necessary. Excessive or improper use can increase exposure to chemicals and reduce effectiveness in the long term. After indoor use, careful ventilation may be necessary depending on the product.
Essential oils or fragrances such as citronella are often promoted as a natural solution. However, they do not automatically replace the recommended protective measures. For families and travellers, a sensible order is therefore advisable: remove accumulations of water, use barriers such as clothing and nets, and apply approved products only additionally and according to the instructions. Medical advice should be sought in the event of fever, rash or severe joint and muscle pain after travel.
Enhanced surveillance of mosquito-borne diseases has been underway in France since 1 May 2026. Authorities point out that protection against bites remains important even after returning from areas with active virus circulation. Those who protect themselves consistently and remove breeding sites not only reduce their own summer nuisance, but also the number of mosquitoes in the immediate surroundings.
