Trial Against 15 Individuals in the Marché du Soleil Case in Marseille

Marseille – 22.06.2026: From June 22 to 26, 2026, a trial will take place at the Criminal Court of Marseille against 15 individuals accused in connection with the Marché du Soleil of selling counterfeit goods and corruption. Among the defendants are three municipal police officers and one official from the Prefecture of Bouches-du-Rhône, who face charges of active and passive corruption as well as abuse of office. These officials were released under conditions beforehand and suspended from their duties.

The Marché du Soleil, an over 3,000 square meter covered market located in the center of Marseille, was closed by the Prefecture for six months in early February 2026. This measure was based on new legislation aimed at combating drug trafficking, which also includes suspicions of money laundering. The closure followed extensive investigations that led to a record seizure of more than 200,000 counterfeit items valued at nearly 42 million euros.

The seized counterfeit goods mainly comprised labels (67%), shoes (11%), clothing (9%), as well as perfumes, jewelry, bags, and caps (each 2%). During the searches, hidden storage locations such as false ceilings and trapdoors used to store the fakes were discovered. Additionally, the investigators found two heat presses and fifteen sewing machines used to apply brand names.

The investigations resulted in charges against 18 individuals, including 15 vendors and three municipal police officers. The officers reportedly received counterfeit goods in exchange for passing on information about upcoming inspections. These four officials were released under conditions and suspended from their official duties.

The authorities emphasized the importance of these measures in the fight against the counterfeit industry and the associated illegal activities. The closure of the Marché du Soleil and ongoing investigations are intended to send a clear message against such practices and to protect the integrity of municipal institutions.

The trial is highly anticipated as it aims not only to hold those responsible for selling counterfeits accountable but also to shed light on the role of public service officials in such cases. The public hopes for a fair trial and a conclusive resolution of the allegations.

The closure of the Marché du Soleil and the ongoing investigations have attracted attention in the region and highlight the challenges in combating counterfeiting and corruption. The authorities rely on prevention and awareness to prevent such illegal activities in the future and to strengthen citizens’ trust in public institutions.
