On this Sunday, Paris is expected to welcome tens of thousands of fans to the official celebration of Paris Saint-Germain’s historic Champions League victory. Between 85,000 and 90,000 people are expected to gather at the Champ de Mars at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, with entrances opening at 2 p.m. PSG players are scheduled to showcase the European Cup on a specially constructed stage about 450 meters long.
The celebration event takes place after a night of great enthusiasm but also considerable tension. In Paris and other French cities, numerous riots occurred after the final victory. Particularly affected were the Champs-Élysées and the area around the Parc des Princes.
According to authorities, 780 people were arrested nationwide, of whom about 480 were arrested in the Paris region. Additionally, 57 security personnel were injured. The incidents included vandalism, arson, looting, and the use of fireworks against police forces.
The Paris Public Prosecutor’s Office announced that 277 people are in police custody, of whom 82 are minors. They face charges including acts of violence, theft, and vandalism.
The contrast between the joy of sport and nighttime riots is striking. While PSG celebrates the greatest success in the club’s history, the happiness of many supporters has been overshadowed by violence committed by a relatively small group.
Despite the incident, the authorities are maintaining their policy to continue the official celebrations. Extensive security plans have been implemented for the event in Paris, with around 22,000 police officers and gendarmes deployed nationwide. Significant traffic regulations and public transport restrictions are in place around the Champ de Mars.
In addition to the fans’ celebrations, the team is also scheduled for a welcome ceremony at the Élysée Palace. The French capital hopes to provide a place to celebrate this sporting success in an orderly manner.
