Broualan, a small village in the Breton department of Ille-et-Vilaine, is usually considered a place of fresh Atlantic air. Even on warm spring days, the proximity to the ocean often ensures pleasant temperatures. But at the end of May 2026, the weather in Brittany followed completely different rules.
“That night I was very hot, it was 28 degrees,” says a resident. The sentence initially sounds like the memory of a holiday day in the Mediterranean. In reality, it comes from a region that many people associate more with windbreaker jackets than tropical nights.
It is precisely the nights that are attracting attention at this time.
While the high daytime values appear spectacular, unusually warm nights are considered particularly significant by meteorology experts. The reason is obvious: if temperatures drop little after sunset, the body lacks the necessary cooling. Sleeping becomes more difficult, apartments heat up, and the pressure on the elderly or people with health problems increases significantly.
In Broualan and other places in Brittany, typical high summer nighttime minimum values have been recorded in these days. Even in nearby Dinard, the nighttime minimum exceeded 22 degrees, clearly surpassing previous May records. For many residents, the night felt more like late July than late May.
The extraordinary heat is not limited to Brittany. In numerous regions of France, local temperature records have been broken within a few days. Meteorology experts speak of an extraordinarily early and persistent heat event. The fact that such high nighttime temperatures are measured in May highlights the peculiarity of the current weather situation.
Those who have lived in Broualan for decades are witnessing a significant change. Summer evenings used to be mild and rarely oppressive. Today, residents report bedrooms that hardly cool down even after midnight. The heat remains like a heavy blanket over the houses.
These are still isolated record events. However, they show how weather extremes are now also occurring in regions that were long considered relatively cool and temperate. Brittany, once synonymous with fresh sea air, is experiencing nights these days that are more reminiscent of southern coasts.
