Report: Israeli Army Allegedly Targeted Journalists in Gaza

Gaza – 05.06.2026: In the past two years, 220 journalists have been killed in the Gaza region. According to Reporters Without Borders (RSF), there is evidence that the Israeli army deliberately targeted 70 of these journalists. These allegations are based on RSF investigations showing that the Israeli forces have targeted journalists on multiple occasions.

A particularly serious incident occurred on August 11, 2025, when an Israeli airstrike near the Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza killed six journalists, including the well-known Al-Jazeera reporter Anas al-Sharif. The Israeli army accused al-Sharif of being a member of Hamas, which he and his organization vehemently denied. This action triggered international outrage and intensified the calls for an independent investigation.

In light of these events, RSF has repeatedly warned about the dangers journalists face in Gaza and called on the international community to strengthen protective measures. In November 2023, the organization filed a complaint with the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate the alleged war crimes against journalists.

Despite these efforts, the situation for journalists in Gaza remains tense. Continued attacks on media representatives make reporting difficult and endanger press freedom in the region. International organizations and governments continue to be urged to take measures to protect journalists and hold those responsible for these attacks accountable.

The Israeli government denies the accusations and emphasizes that journalists are not deliberately targeted. It argues that the attacks are part of military operations against Hamas and that the journalists killed were in fact Hamas fighters. These claims have, however, been rejected by RSF and other international organizations, which insist on the necessity of an independent investigation.

The international community faces the challenge of ensuring the safety of journalists in conflict zones and defending the principles of press freedom. The events in Gaza highlight the dangers journalists face in war zones and underscore the importance of protective measures and international cooperation.

Overall, the question of whether the Israeli army deliberately targeted journalists in Gaza remains a contentious issue. However, the continued attacks on media representatives and repeated calls for independent investigations point to a serious threat to press freedom in the region.

The situation calls for a comprehensive international response to ensure journalists’ safety and uphold the principles of free and independent reporting.
