RER D: Air Conditioning Remains the Exception – 70% of Trains Without Cooling

Paris – 20.06.2026: Despite the current heatwave, 70% of the trains on the RER D line are not air-conditioned. This leads to significant complaints from passengers, as temperatures inside the trains under current conditions are unbearable. RATP has announced plans to replace all trains with air-conditioned models by 2029 to improve commuter comfort.

The RER D line is one of the most heavily used lines in Paris public transit and connects numerous suburbs with the city center. Despite the high number of passengers and rising temperatures, many of the trains in use are still not equipped with air conditioning. This especially results in intolerable conditions for passengers during the summer months.

In recent years, RATP has begun modernizing its fleet. In December 2024, the first trains of the new generation (RER Nouvelle Génération) were put into operation on the D line. These trains are air-conditioned and offer passengers greater comfort. However, the share of these modern trains is still small, so the vast majority of passengers continue to travel in non-air-conditioned trains.

To increase passenger comfort, RATP plans to replace all trains on line D with air-conditioned models by 2029. This measure is part of a comprehensive modernization plan aimed at making public transport in the Île-de-France region more attractive and comfortable. However, full implementation of this plan will take several years, meaning passengers will have to cope with the existing conditions in the meantime.

In the meantime, RATP recommends passengers carry sufficient water during the hot summer days and wear light clothing to make travel conditions as comfortable as possible. It is also advised to regularly check current timetables and any changes, as there may be increased disruptions to service during the summer months.

Fleet modernization is an important step to make public transit in the Île-de-France region future-proof. However, it will still take several years until the full transition to air-conditioned trains is completed. Until then, passengers must continue to cope with the current conditions.

RATP emphasizes that the health and well-being of passengers are the highest priority and is committed to continuously improving conditions in public transportation. Passengers are asked to show understanding for the current circumstances and to use the provided information to plan their trips as best as possible.
