Residential building in Athens neighborhood Petralona partially collapsed – investigations into construction work on neighboring plot

Athens – 30.06.2026: In Petralona, an inner-city neighborhood of Athens, a four- to five-storey residential building partially collapsed on Tuesday during work on the adjacent plot. Video footage from the state broadcaster ERT showed cracks spreading and the street-facing façade sagging at first before larger parts of the masonry gave way. The fire brigade cordoned off the area extensively and deployed additional civil protection forces to the neighborhood.

Immediately after the collapse, emergency crews searched the rubble with sniffer dogs and locating devices to rule out that people had been buried. Initially there were reports of missing persons that later proved unfounded: according to the fire brigade all residents were identified or brought to safety, and no serious injuries were initially reported. A senior incident commander said the acute rescue operation had moved into a phase of securing and assessing the site to prevent further settlement.

According to first assessments by the authorities, construction work was taking place on the adjacent plot that may have affected the stability of the residential building. Deputy mayor Andreas Grammatikoyannis told ERT that there may have been failures in the static securing of the excavation. Local media reported that the police provisionally detained several people involved in the construction site, including the responsible site manager and the property owner, in order to record identities and check permits.

City structural engineers, representatives from the National Technical University of Athens and specialists from the Greek Association of Civil Engineers were called in. They will examine the condition of the adjacent buildings, the ground and foundation conditions and the securing measures used. Focus areas include the depth and shielding of the excavation, temporary shoring, vibrations from heavy machinery and compliance with requirements. According to experts a final assessment will take some time, as measurement data, plans and samples must first be evaluated.

The public prosecutor has opened a criminal investigation. The legality of the building permit, construction supervision and possible violations of safety regulations are being examined. The city announced a systematic review of the files; at the same time static inspections are being offered to residents in the neighborhood. Authorities urged people not to spread unconfirmed information on social media so as not to impede the investigation.

The incident has reignited in Athens the debate about the renovation and monitoring of older residential buildings, which often sit close to new construction projects. Experts have long pointed out that work on neighboring plots requires careful preliminary investigations and continuous monitoring. Whether the collapse will lead to immediate changes in inspections or construction requirements is unclear; the authorities, however, pledged a transparent clarification.
