RN spokesperson Laurent Jacobelli criticizes Macron’s absence during the wildfires in southern France

Paris – 06.07.2026: Laurent Jacobelli, member of parliament for Moselle and spokesperson for the Rassemblement national (RN), sharply criticized President Emmanuel Macron in an interview with Franceinfo. According to Jacobelli, the head of state was “absent” during the recent major wildfires in southern France and missed his “rendezvous” with residents. He accused the government of failing to respond adequately to the fires, which, according to media reports and official statements, affected large areas and triggered numerous evacuations.
Official bodies dispute this view. The prefectures of the affected departments and the Interior Ministry point to a nationwide reinforcement deployment involving thousands of firefighters and civil protection personnel, as well as the establishment of an interministerial crisis unit. As early as late June, a situation center had been operating to address the expected heatwave and increased fire risk. Additional firefighting resources and aerial support were also brought in from various regions to contain the outbreaks and secure settlements.
Politically, Jacobelli’s claims coincide with a period of heightened alert. Several municipalities ordered temporary evacuations, while civil protection established restricted zones and controlled access. Reports describe extensive, partly difficult-to-access fire sites, where rescue teams operated amid shifting winds. Organizers also reviewed their response, checking routes and logistics in affected areas to ensure access and protect residents and participants.
In the same interview, Jacobelli responded to criticism from former Prime Minister Édouard Philippe, who had pointed to the RN’s strategic inconsistencies. Jacobelli cited Philippe’s record in government, including the 80 km/h speed limit, developments in national debt, and the Yellow Vest protests. In doing so, he shifted the focus from the immediate crisis debate to broader issues of political responsibility and leadership style.
Beyond the immediate fire situation, questions of prevention and adaptation are emerging. The debate includes forest and vegetation management, firebreaks, water resources, distance from residential areas, and the equipment of firefighters and civil protection services. While the government cites preventive measures, financial support, and guidelines for new risk areas, the opposition points to shortcomings in implementation, funding, and coordination between the state, regions, and municipalities. In the face of frequent heatwaves and prolonged drought, the challenge remains to establish protective measures nationwide without delaying the reconstruction of affected communities.
The situation on the ground remains fluid, but the controversy is hardening the tone in Paris. Between crisis management, public expectations, and partisan exchanges, the question is how quickly the state apparatus can respond to extreme weather events and how permanently funding for prevention, equipment, and recovery can be secured.
