Roland-Garros: João Fonseca eliminates Novak Djokovic after a dramatic five-set match

Paris – 29.05.2026: On the traditional Court Philippe-Chatrier one of the most spectacular matches of this year’s Roland-Garros took place on Friday. 19-year-old Brazilian João Fonseca defeated 38-year-old Serbian Novak Djokovic, 24-time Grand Slam winner and living legend of tennis, in a marathon lasting almost five hours with the score of 4–6, 4–6, 6–3, 7–5 and 7–5. It was not only the decisive victory for Fonseca, but also one of the biggest upsets of the tournament.

Djokovic had dominated the start, using his experience on clay. With 6–4 and 6–4 he took the first two sets, but his young opponent never gave up. Fonseca showed an impressive comeback: he adapted his game, increased aggression and skillfully varied his shot techniques. He continuously managed to disturb Djokovic’s rhythm and impose his own pace.

Especially in the fourth set an intense, tension-filled phase developed, in which Fonseca won his first set. In the decisive fifth set, at 5–5 he took the initiative. With three consecutive winning serves he claimed the decisive break and later, with another ace, the match point. After the final point he led his fans in a joyful celebration and appeared extremely happy for the greatest success of his young career.

At the press conference Fonseca expressed his respect for Djokovic, whom he has admired for years as an idol: “I tried to stay calm and enjoy every point. It was incredible to play against someone like Novak.” Djokovic showed sportsmanship praising his opponent’s performance: “João was the better player from the third set onward and deserved to win. I wish him the best of luck for the rest of the tournament.”

With this unexpected elimination Djokovic loses the chance to win his 25th Grand Slam title. For João Fonseca, however, reaching the round of 16 opens a promising prospect: he now has the opportunity to establish himself as one of the emerging talents of world tennis. The young Brazilian is immediately considered a serious contender for future tournaments on clay and other surfaces.

The tennis world watches the next round of Roland-Garros with interest, where Fonseca will face a challenging opponent. His fighting spirit and composure in the match against Djokovic have shown that he can compete at the highest level.
