Roland Lescure speaks about wildfires, heatwaves and fuel prices

Instead, time-limited support tailored to specific sectors has been announced or extended. These measures target, among others, transport companies, the fishing industry, agriculture and other businesses with particularly high travel or energy costs.

The instruments already deployed include support for individual occupational groups, adjustments to kilometre-based expense allowances for certain service sectors and short-term grants for small businesses. At the same time, the government has called on fuel retailers to pass on lower global prices to customers as quickly as possible. However, whether this will lead to significant relief at all petrol stations also depends on raw material prices, transport costs and the level of local competition.

The economic debate is intensified by the consequences of the heatwave. Forest fires, water shortages, production disruptions and pressure on transport networks can generate costs for businesses and public budgets. The government is therefore combining short-term support measures with the goal of reducing fossil energy consumption in the long term and expanding the use of electricity from domestic production.
