Galați – 29 May 2026: On Friday night, an incident with far-reaching consequences occurred in the city of Galați in southeastern Romania. A Russian drone, while attacking Ukraine, entered Romanian airspace and crashed onto the roof of a ten-story apartment building. The impact caused an explosion and a fire on the top floor of the building. Two residents, a 51-year-old woman and a 14-year-old boy, were slightly injured and treated at the scene. The remaining residents left the building in time, so no one else was injured.
Romania’s defense minister stated that the drone entered Romanian airspace during a Russian attack on civilian targets and infrastructure in Ukraine near the border with Romania. The military used two F-16 fighter jets and a helicopter for monitoring. The decision not to shoot down the drone was made to avoid risks to the population.
Romania’s Foreign Ministry condemned the incident as a “serious and irresponsible escalation” by Russia. Romania informed its allies as well as the NATO Secretary General about the situation and requested the strengthening of air defense systems. The Russian ambassador was also summoned to express the government’s concerns.
NATO and the European Union responded with strong criticism and called the attack a serious violation of European airspace. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned that Russia “has crossed another red line.” The incident further increases concerns about the growing threat posed by Russian drone attacks in the region.
Since the start of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, 47 drone fragments have been found on Romanian territory, but this is the first time a Russian drone has directly struck an inhabited building and injured civilians. Romanian authorities announced that they would tighten security measures and expand cooperation with international partners to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Experts see this as a challenge for NATO, as the incident highlights the importance of effective air defense against asymmetric threats. A comprehensive investigation will be conducted to clarify how the drone entered the airspace and what security gaps existed. The results will form the basis for further protective measures.
The international community faces the task of responding appropriately to such incidents without endangering civilian safety. The events in Galați highlight the importance of cooperation among NATO member states in ensuring regional stability and preventing escalation.
