Russian Drone Hits Residential Building in Romania – Two Injured and International Condemnation

Galați – 29.05.2026: On Friday night, an incident with far-reaching consequences occurred in the southeastern Romanian city of Galați. A Russian drone, which had entered Romanian airspace during an attack on Ukraine, crashed onto the roof of a ten-story residential building. The impact caused an explosion and a fire on the building’s top floor. Two residents, a 51-year-old woman and a 14-year-old boy, sustained minor injuries and were treated on site. The other residents were able to leave the building in time, so no further injuries were reported.

Romania’s Minister of Defense stated that the drone had entered Romanian airspace during a Russian attack on civilian targets and infrastructure in Ukraine near the Romanian border. The military deployed two F-16 fighter jets and a helicopter for surveillance. The decision not to shoot down the drone was made to avoid risks to the population.

The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the incident as a “severe and irresponsible escalation” by Russia. Romania informed its allies as well as the NATO Secretary General about the situation and called for a strengthening of air defenses. Additionally, the Russian ambassador was summoned to express the government’s concerns.

NATO and the European Union responded with sharp criticism, calling the attack a serious violation of European airspace. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, warned that Russia had “crossed another red line.” The incident raises concerns about the increasing threat posed by Russian drone attacks in the region.

Since the start of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, 47 drone fragments have already been found on Romanian territory, but this marks the first attack in which a Russian drone directly struck an inhabited building and injured civilians. Romanian authorities announced plans to tighten security measures and expand cooperation with international partners to prevent such incidents in the future.

Experts see this event as a challenge for NATO, as it highlights the importance of effective air defense against asymmetrical threats. A comprehensive investigation will clarify how the drone was able to enter the airspace and identify security gaps. The results will form the basis for further protective measures.

The international community faces the task of responding appropriately to such incidents without endangering civilian safety. The events in Galați illustrate the importance of cooperation among NATO member states to ensure regional stability and prevent escalation.
