Savéol Relies on Biological Pest Control in Tomato Cultivation

Plougastel-Daoulas – 04.06.2026: The Breton cooperative Savéol has committed itself for over 40 years to biological pest control in tomato cultivation. Instead of relying on chemical pesticides, the cooperative breeds insects that naturally control pests. This method enables sustainable and environmentally friendly production of tomatoes and other vegetables.

In 2013, Savéol opened a special facility for beneficial insect breeding in Guipavas. There, among other insects, micro-geos and predatory bugs are bred, which specifically combat pests such as whiteflies and spider mites. These insects are released in greenhouses to control the pests and reduce the use of chemical plant protection products.

The breeding of beneficial insects is a central part of Savéol’s strategy, which focuses on biological pest control. By integrating this method into the cultivation process, the cooperative has been able to significantly reduce the use of pesticides while simultaneously improving the quality and taste of its products.

In addition to biological pest control, Savéol is also engaged in other areas of sustainable agriculture. For instance, in 2024, the entire packaging process was switched to plastic-free materials. Tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers are now offered exclusively in packaging made of 100% cardboard or combined with cellulose film. This measure contributes to the reduction of plastic waste and complies with current environmental standards.

The cooperative has also invested in expanding its beneficial insect breeding. An extension of the facility in Guipavas by 1,200 square meters was completed in 2021 to meet the growing demand for organically grown products. This investment allows Savéol to better meet the needs of its members and to further increase the production of beneficial insects.

Through these sustainable practices, Savéol has not only reduced environmental impact but also achieved economic benefits. The demand for organically grown products is steadily increasing, and the cooperative has been able to continuously increase its revenue in recent years. In 2025, sales amounted to 264 million euros, representing an increase of over 10% compared to the previous year.

The successful implementation of these sustainable methods shows that biological pest control and environmentally friendly production can go hand in hand with economic success. Savéol serves as a role model for other agricultural enterprises that wish to take the step toward a more sustainable future.

Through continuous investment in research and development as well as adaptation to market trends, Savéol remains a leading player in the field of sustainable agriculture and sets standards for the industry.
