Saveol promotes organic pest control in tomato cultivation

Plougastel-Daoulas – June 4, 2026: The Brittany-based cooperative Saveol has been working on organic pest control in tomato cultivation for over 40 years. Instead of relying on chemical pesticides, they breed insects that naturally control pests. This method enables sustainable and environmentally friendly production of tomatoes and other vegetables.

In 2013, Saveol opened a specialized facility for beneficial insect breeding in Gipava. There, insects such as Microgalls and Predatory Mites are bred, which specifically target pests like thrips and spider mites. These insects are released in greenhouses, contributing to pest control and the reduction of chemical pesticide use.

Beneficial insect breeding is a central element of Saveol’s strategy based on organic pest control. By incorporating this method into the cultivation process, the cooperative has been able to significantly reduce pesticide use while improving product quality and taste.

In addition to organic pest control, Saveol is also focusing on other areas of sustainable agriculture. For example, in 2024, they switched the entire packaging process to plastic-free materials. Tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers are now offered in 100% paper packaging or a combination with cellulose film. This measure contributes to reducing plastic waste and complies with the latest environmental standards.

The cooperative has also invested in expanding the beneficial insect breeding facility. In 2021, the Gipava facility was expanded by 1,200 square meters to meet the growing demand for organic products. This investment has enabled Saveol to better meet member needs and further expand beneficial insect production.

These sustainable practices have allowed Saveol to achieve not only a reduction in environmental impact but also economic benefits. Demand for organic products has steadily increased, and the cooperative has continuously raised its sales in recent years. In 2025, sales reached 264 million euros, more than 10% higher than the previous year.

The success of these sustainable methods demonstrates that organic pest control and environmentally friendly production can coexist with economic success. Saveol serves as a model for other agricultural businesses looking to step toward a more sustainable future.

Through ongoing investment in research and development and adaptation to market trends, Saveol continues to set industry standards as a leader in sustainable agriculture.
