Savoie: 22-year-old firefighter fatally injured during firefighting operation at Planay

Planay – 08.07.2026: A 22-year-old volunteer sapeur-pompier died on Wednesday morning during an operation against a vegetation fire in the commune of Planay (Savoie). According to the Gendarmerie, the accident occurred in a hard-to-reach section of the Planay massif when a rock or scree slide surprised the response team and struck the young firefighter. Despite immediate aid, rescuers were only able to confirm his death.

The deceased belonged to a unit of the Service départemental d’incendie et de secours of Savoie (SDIS 73), which had been working for several hours on fire lines in the steep terrain. The prefecture confirmed the incident in the early hours and expressed its condolences to the family, colleagues, and the entire corps. The Gendarmerie has opened an investigation to clarify the course of events and causes of the rockfall; only limited details will be released until it is concluded.

On site, the SDIS staff service and the local command coordinated further measures. The Prefect of Savoie, Vanina Nicoli, went to the command post to assess the situation and safety precautions. According to the authorities, the safety of the responders remains the top priority. Additional safety measures – such as altered approaches, temporary cordons, and expanded rockfall monitoring – are being considered to reduce risks in particularly exposed sections.

The fire at Planay had been active in the days beforehand and required repeated deployments by local and regional teams. The terrain is highly structured, with scree fields, narrow paths, and abrupt steep faces. These conditions, combined with shifting winds, complicate firefighting and increase the risk of secondary events such as rockfall. According to responders, protecting vulnerable residential areas and infrastructure was the priority; firebreaks and mop-up operations were continuously adjusted.

Authorities and response organizations have expressed wide sympathy. The SDIS 73 honored the commitment of the deceased and of all the crews mobilized against vegetation fires during the summer season. Across France, firefighters are once again facing prolonged dry periods and challenging terrain this season. In mountain regions like Savoie, slope instabilities, loose boulder fields, and limited retreat areas are among the recurring operational risks.

The situation at the fire site remains under the command’s observation. Residents should follow the prefecture’s guidance regarding access restrictions and smoke exposure. Authorities ask that cordons be strictly respected and that any suspicious fire developments be reported immediately.
