School in Hérault Relies on Nighttime Ventilation During Heatwave

Hérault – 25.06.2026: The summer heat in southern France poses major challenges for schools. The Jean Ponsy school in the Hérault department is responding to the ongoing heatwave with an innovative yet simple concept: nighttime ventilation to keep rooms cool for daytime lessons. Windows are opened wide during the cooler night hours to allow heat stored in the walls and furniture to escape. This aims to prevent classrooms from overheating, which especially on very hot days impairs students’ ability to concentrate.

This approach is part of a pilot program initiated by the French Ministry of Education in cooperation with environmental agencies. In total, 15 schools in various regions were selected to test practical and cost-effective methods to adapt to increasingly frequent heatwaves. Jean Ponsy school is among the pioneers. In addition to nighttime fresh air supply, the program relies on simple measures such as sun protection systems, planting shade-giving greenery in front of windows, and using mobile umbrellas to reduce direct sunlight.

The experiences from these projects are intended to serve as a basis for recommendations to help as many schools as possible in similar climatic conditions. Especially in rural or less financially strong areas, expensive air conditioning systems are often not an option, so the focus is on quick and practical solutions. Nighttime ventilation offers the added benefit of improved air quality in classrooms alongside temperature regulation.

Affected schools in southern France have complained for years about overheated rooms that represent an enormous burden for everyone involved during extreme heat periods. The lack of sufficient ventilation options and building conditions complicate effective cooling. The initiators of the pilot program hope that the success of the measures at Jean Ponsy and other locations will lead to widespread adoption of these methods.

In a time when climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of heatwaves, working on adaptation strategies in educational institutions is highly important. Young people spend a lot of time in schools, and their well-being as well as learning conditions must not be impaired by heat stress. The measures at Jean Ponsy demonstrate how sustainable improvements can be achieved with limited resources, which in the long term also reduce energy consumption and strengthen resilience against extreme weather.

The approach of the school in Hérault is an important contribution to climate protection at the local level. It demonstrates how practical solutions to improve indoor climate are an integral part of adapting to changed environmental conditions, making educational institutions future-proof.
