School Supplies 2026: When Families Can Save the Most on Shopping

Paris – 21/07/2026: Sales of school supplies for the 2026/2027 school year have already begun in earnest in many French supermarkets. Families are encountering extensive promotional offers on notebooks, pens, binders and folders. However, a recent survey by the consumer association Que Choisir Ensemble indicates that prices are on average 2 percent above their July 2025 level.

July is therefore primarily a period when careful price comparison is worthwhile. Retail chains use school supplies as loss leaders and lower prices on particularly sought-after standard items. According to current market observations, discounts are gradually being expanded over the course of the summer. Especially strong promotions on classic school-list products are expected from early to mid-August.

For families, this means that not every item has to be bought immediately. The first sensible step is to take stock at home. School bags, fountain pens, rulers, protective covers or still-unused notebooks from the previous year can often be reused. Only then should the list of supplies issued by the school be completed selectively. This prevents duplicate purchases and reduces the impact of short-term advertising offers.

For comparable products, store brands and lower-priced private labels can noticeably reduce the bill. However, it remains essential to follow teachers’ exact requirements, for example regarding format, paper thickness or specific pens. A cheap item is not a saving if it subsequently has to be replaced. Brand-name products may be worthwhile where durability or special features are explicitly required.

The timing of individual purchases should also be based on availability. Basic supplies such as notebooks, pencils and glue are available in large quantities and are regularly promoted. Specific items, including certain folder formats, compasses or art-class materials, may have more limited availability later on. In these cases, buying early may be sensible despite possible later discounts.

According to industry figures, major supermarkets remain the most important sales outlet for school supplies, accounting for around 70 percent of these purchases. Specialist retailers also promote rebate campaigns and package offers. Consumers should always check the final price: volume discounts or refunds are only advantageous if the required items are actually included in the offer and no unnecessary additional purchases are made.

The best strategy for summer 2026 is therefore to stagger purchases. Families can secure needed specialty items now, while continuing to watch for promotions on standard supplies and comparing prices across several retailers. The Que Choisir Ensemble survey also shows that conscious selection is becoming more important: given the price increase compared with 2025, reuse, store brands and targeted special offers can make the start of the school year significantly less expensive.
