Sean Penn Plans Film about the Capitol Storming on January 6, 2021

New York – 06/16/2026: Actor and director Sean Penn will direct a film about the storming of the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. The project includes both directing and screenplay, both to be undertaken by Penn himself. Bradley Cooper is in talks for the lead role as a police officer who played a central role during the attack, although an official confirmation of his involvement is still pending.

The film is based on real events and focuses on the perspective of law enforcement officers who stood on the front lines defending the Capitol. Sean Penn pursues this project driven by his long-standing interest in political and social issues. During the public hearings of the House Select Committee in 2022, which investigated the January 6 attack, Penn sat beside police officers Michael Fanone and Daniel Hodges, who suffered severe trauma during the uprising and are now considered eyewitnesses.

Filming is expected to begin in mid-2027. The announcement comes alongside new developments in the American media industry: The U.S. Department of Justice recently decided not to block the acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery by Paramount Skydance. Warner Bros. is under the leadership of new CEO David Ellison, who maintains well-known connections to former President Donald Trump.

The film project offers an opportunity to revisit the events of January 6 from a very personal and simultaneously dramatic perspective. Additional themes will include unexpected friendships and the long-term consequences of the attack for those involved.

The planned collaboration between Sean Penn and Bradley Cooper has generated significant interest in the film world. Both artists rank among Hollywood’s most renowned actors and have successfully worked together multiple times. Experts anticipate a film that will be emotionally intense and dramaturgically sophisticated.

The film will be produced by Warner Bros., and the project could be presented in various cinemas over the coming years. Details about additional casting and the exact schedule for production and release are expected in the near future.

This endeavor joins a number of artistic works dealing with the political and social legacy of January 6, 2021. In addition to feature films, documentaries and reports have already been released that offer different perspectives on the Capitol storming.

The announcement confirms the ongoing public interest in addressing this impactful event, which has lasting consequences for American democracy and society. Through this cinematic interpretation, Sean Penn aims to contribute to a deeper engagement and to bring the stories of those affected into focus.
