C1 cable car in Creteil becomes an attraction for Paris visitors

Creteil – 19 July 2026: According to a recent Franceinfo report, the C1 urban cable car in southeastern Paris is also becoming a destination for foreign visitors. The system connects Creteil with Villeneuve-Saint-Georges, passing through Limeil-Brevannes and Valenton. For travelers, the ride is particularly appealing because of its unusual view over the densely built-up eastern part of the Paris metropolitan area.

The Cable C1 entered service on 13 December 2025. According to Ile-de-France Mobilites, it is the first urban cable car in the Ile-de-France region. Five stations serve a 4.5-kilometer route. The cabins operate at short intervals and are fully accessible. The line thus complements the existing Metro, bus and regional transport network.

At the western terminus, Creteil – Pointe du Lac, there is a connection to Metro Line 8. The cable car is primarily intended to provide better links to neighborhoods that had previously been separated from one another by major transport corridors, railway tracks and other physical barriers. Ile-de-France Mobilites puts the travel time for the full route at around 18 minutes. According to the transport authority, the same journey took considerably longer by bus.

The current Franceinfo report describes the system as an unexpected attraction for international visitors to Paris. However, no specific figures were published on tourist journeys or visitors’ countries of origin. Nevertheless, the observation shows that a service primarily planned as a local public transport project can also attract attention beyond central Paris.

For local residents, its everyday function remains crucial. The transport authority expects up to 11,000 passengers per day when operations begin. Each cabin has ten seats and is intended to run at intervals of less than 30 seconds during peak periods. The system was therefore not designed as an excursion railway, but as a regular means of public transport for commuters, schoolchildren and other passengers.

The route passes through four municipalities in the Val-de-Marne department: Creteil, Limeil-Brevannes, Valenton and Villeneuve-Saint-Georges. Following the opening, final works were still under way around the stations, including on the RD1 road. Ile-de-France Mobilites reported their completion in May 2026. The cable car itself continues to operate as part of the region’s regular fare and transport services.

The fact that visitors are deliberately using the Cable C1 could change perceptions of Paris’s eastern suburbs. At the same time, the measure of the system’s success remains its practical impact on everyday life: shorter, more reliable journeys and better access to the Metro network. Tourist curiosity is therefore a side effect that complements, but does not replace, the connection’s original purpose.
