Power Outage in Finistère: 68,000 Households Affected, Full Restoration Expected Only by Evening

Quimper – 24.06.2026: On Tuesday evening, June 23, 2026, an incident occurred at a high-voltage substation of the French transmission system operator RTE in the municipality of Ergué-Gabéric near Quimper. This incident caused power outages for up to 106,000 households in southern Finistère. The cause of the incident was attributed to an accident and the currently prevailing high temperatures. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The affected areas include Quimper, Briec, Pont-l’Abbé, and Douarnenez, among others. The Finistère prefecture has set up a crisis unit to coordinate the situation and accelerate the restoration of power supply. Teams from RTE and Enedis worked throughout the night to gradually restore electricity. However, it was communicated that full restoration would occur no earlier than the evening of June 24, 2026.

The high temperatures prevailing in the region have placed additional strain on the infrastructure. In Ergué-Gabéric, temperatures reached up to 37°C on the day of the incident, which is unusually high for this coastal area.

The prefecture emphasized that the cause of the incident was accidental and related to the extreme temperatures. However, it was pointed out that full power restoration would not take place before the evening of June 24, 2026.

In the meantime, emergency measures have been implemented to minimize the impact on the affected households. Especially facilities such as nursing homes affected by the power outage are being supplied with mobile generators to maintain operations.

The Finistère prefecture has established a crisis cell to coordinate the situation and speed up the restoration of power. The teams from RTE and Enedis worked through the night to gradually bring the electricity back. However, it was reported that full restoration would only be achieved by the evening of June 24, 2026.

The high temperatures in the region have further burdened the infrastructure. On the day of the incident, temperatures in Ergué-Gabéric reached up to 37°C, an unusually high figure for this coastal region.

The prefecture stressed that the cause of the incident was accidental and caused by extreme temperatures. It was also noted that full restoration is expected only by the evening of June 24, 2026.

Emergency measures are in place to reduce the impact on affected households. Nursing homes and similar facilities affected by the outage are receiving mobile generators to keep services running.
