Strong Solidarity with Firefighters During Wildfires in France

Fontainebleau – 18 July 2026: As France battles forest and vegetation fires in several regions, deployed firefighters are experiencing a major wave of support. Members of the public thank teams personally at operation sites, applaud them or offer practical assistance. According to reports by Franceinfo, the gestures range from providing equipment to supporting particularly exhausting operations.

The solidarity comes at a time of intense pressure on the fire service. In the Fontainebleau region of Seine-et-Marne, around 800 firefighters were battling a major fire that had been ongoing since 12 July, according to the Gendarmerie. More than 2,000 hectares of forest were affected by the flames. Police and the Gendarmerie are securing access routes, protecting local residents and supporting operational command.

Weather conditions also remain a decisive risk factor. On Saturday, Meteo-France warned of elevated to very high wildfire danger in the Mediterranean region and Corsica. Rising temperatures and dry air encourage new fires and can accelerate their spread. Authorities are therefore urging the public to comply with fire bans and immediately report potential fire sources via the emergency numbers 18 or 112.

For emergency personnel, public support is important, but it must not obstruct work on the ground. Those wishing to help should not enter restricted areas, should keep access routes clear and follow official instructions. Particularly when wind conditions change rapidly, the situation and evacuation decisions can change at short notice. Uncoordinated aid efforts near a fire can create additional dangers.

The national prevention campaign for the fire season is running this year from June to September. According to the government, nine out of ten forest and vegetation fires are caused by human behaviour. This includes carelessly discarded cigarettes, improperly secured work that produces sparks and open flames. Keeping areas around buildings clear can slow the spread of a fire and facilitate access for firefighters.

The many expressions of thanks also demonstrate how strongly the work of the fire service is recognised in affected communities. Alongside professional firefighters, volunteer personnel make an essential contribution to French civil protection. They work under severe physical strain, often over long periods and in extreme heat. Public recognition and responsible behaviour can effectively support their work.

In the coming days, it will remain crucial for prevention and operational readiness to work together. Authorities monitor wildfire danger daily and adjust protective measures regionally.
