It was a March that is likely to go down in the weather history of the North – and in the hearts of its residents. While southern France groaned under torrential rain, the North enjoyed sunshine more commonly associated with the Côte d’Azur. Cafés opened their terraces weeks earlier than usual, and Boulogne-sur-Mer suddenly felt like Biarritz – only without the palm trees.
A meteorological curiosity? Perhaps. A little break from everyday life? Absolutely.
Records that make people take notice
In Valenciennes, only 3.2 millimetres of rain fell in March – a figure that seems almost surreal when you consider how grey and wet this region usually is. Météo-France described it as one of the driest March months since records began in 1959.
And then there was Calais – the real sensation: With 222 hours of sunshine, the port city even outshone Nice. Calais, sunnier than the capital of the Riviera? It sounds like a late April Fool’s joke, but it was reality.
The northern coast blossoms
In cities such as Dunkirk, Boulogne-sur-Mer and Calais, the weather miracle was put to use immediately. Restaurateurs who would normally still be polishing their patio heaters in March suddenly set up their sun umbrellas. “We did not expect to open our terrace so early in the year,” says a restaurant owner from Boulogne-sur-Mer. “But in weather like this, it would be a shame not to take advantage of the opportunity.”
And the guests? They came in droves. Coffee, crêpes and chilled rosé were served outdoors – accompanied by the clinking of glasses and the shimmer of unfamiliar warmth.
A spring that tastes like summer
A visitor in Dunkirk summed up the feeling of life like this: “It almost feels like summer.” Anyone suddenly sitting outside in a T-shirt after months of grey skies can feel this lightness, otherwise more likely found in holiday brochures. It was as if the sky itself had sent out an invitation: Come outside, people, it’s your day.
More than just a weather phenomenon
But amid all the joy, there are also quiet undertones. Meteorologists view such deviations with concern. An expert from Météo-France explained: “These extreme weather conditions could be an indication of larger climatic changes.”
A period of exceptional drought – as pleasant as it may seem – is part of a pattern that could be problematic in the long term. Wildfire risk, water shortages, altered vegetation cycles: the effects of such developments are complex and often only fully visible years later.
Between sunbathing and reflection
The people there are enjoying the moment. And who could blame them? It was an invitation to take a deep breath, to laugh, to share – in the midst of spring, which suddenly tastes like a holiday. At the same time, there is an awareness: as beautiful as the weather is, it raises questions. And perhaps that is precisely the new reality – a mixture of joy and responsibility, lightness and reflection.
A Gift That Encourages Reflection
What remains is this image: full terraces, relaxed faces, sun on their faces – and a slight unease in the back of their minds. For as much as northern France enjoyed this golden chapter of March, it is clear that it was no ordinary one. Rather, one that invites us to pause. Perhaps even to rethink.
But until then: people are enjoying every ray of sunshine – and raising their glasses to the here and now.
