Paris – 28.05.2026: On Thursday, May 28, 2026, new temperature records were measured in several French cities. In Angoulême, the temperature reached 37.8°C, in Narbonne 37.6°C, and in Perpignan 37.4°C. This is the first time that the 37°C mark has been exceeded in France in May.
The recorded high temperatures significantly surpassed the previous records for the month of May. In Angoulême, the old record of 30.0°C, measured on May 9, 2026, was exceeded by 7.8°C. In Narbonne, the previous high was also 30.0°C, from May 9, 2026, and it was surpassed by 7.6°C. In Perpignan, the old record of 24.1°C, measured on May 11, 2026, was exceeded by 13.3°C.
These exceptional temperatures were confirmed by Météo-France, the French weather authority. The agency warned about the potential health risks associated with such extreme temperatures, especially for elderly people, individuals with chronic illnesses, and children. It recommended staying in the shade as much as possible during the hottest hours of the day, particularly between 11 a.m. and 9 p.m., and ensuring adequate hydration.
The current weather conditions in Angoulême, Narbonne, and Perpignan continue to be characterized by high temperatures. Angoulême is experiencing sunny weather with a current temperature of 34°C. Narbonne is also sunny at 33°C, and Perpignan’s temperature is 35°C. Weather warnings due to extreme heat currently apply to all three cities.
This heatwave is part of a global trend of rising temperatures observed worldwide in recent years. Experts warn of the long-term impacts of climate change and emphasize the need to implement measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to prevent such extreme weather events in the future.
In the affected regions, it is recommended to shift outdoor activities to the cooler morning and evening hours and to stay in air-conditioned spaces as much as possible during the hottest parts of the day. People who work physically or engage in sports are particularly at risk of heat strokes.
Authorities will continue to monitor the situation and inform the public about further developments. It is advised to follow local weather warnings and recommendations from the responsible agencies to minimize health risks.
These events underline the urgency to take action against climate change and to prepare for future extreme weather conditions.
