The Strokes release their seventh album “Reality Awaits”

New York – 24 July 2026: The Strokes have released their seventh studio album, “Reality Awaits.” The record arrives six years after its predecessor, “The New Abnormal” from 2020, and includes nine new tracks. With the album, the New York quintet returns during a period in which the members had focused primarily on solo projects and occasional festival appearances alongside the band.

The current release is distributed via Cult Records and RCA Records. Rick Rubin was involved as a producer and has been associated with the group for several years. According to the label, the material was initially created in Costa Rica and subsequently completed in various locations. The advance single “Going Shopping” launched the album’s campaign in the spring.

Musically, “Reality Awaits” does not opt for a mere repetition of the early garage-rock format that made the band famous in the early 2000s. Guitars, bass, and distinctive drum figures remain the framework. On top of this are synthetic textures and heavily distorted vocal parts by Julian Casablancas. The frequent use of Auto-Tune in particular defines the overall impression.

This production choice will likely shape its reception. While earlier Strokes albums often relied on a demonstrative economy of sound, the new record instead seeks the contrast between direct rock patterns and digital alienation. The album’s brevity—nine songs in around half an hour—prevents the stylistic shifts from developing into an extended concept work.

The title “Reality Awaits” and song titles such as “Lonely in the Future,” “The Fruits of Conquest,” and “Tyrants of the Mellow Moon” give the album a contemporary, partly dystopian tone. However, no substantiated political manifesto can be inferred from this. To the extent that it becomes audible, the political ambition lies more in diagnosing alienation, consumption, and public staging than in concrete positions.

For the band, the release also has institutional significance. “Is This It” made The Strokes a defining force of the New York rock revival in 2001; the subsequent albums were measured against that standard. “The New Abnormal” won the Grammy for Best Rock Album in 2021. The new work must therefore measure itself both against the band’s own early period and the success of its immediate predecessor.

The first reviews paint a mixed but serious picture. Individual melodies and the attempt to expand the familiar repertoire have been praised; the dominance of vocal processing has sometimes been viewed skeptically. It is precisely this tension that makes “Reality Awaits” an album that aims to be less a nostalgic return than a deliberate redefinition of its own form.
