Three Women Injured in Knife Attack at Porte de Clichy

Porte de Clichy – 27 July 2026: A man armed with two kitchen knives attacked three women on Monday morning in northwestern Paris. The incident occurred shortly after 11:30 a.m. at Porte de Clichy in the 17th arrondissement, a busy transport hub with connections to the metro, tram and suburban rail services. The victims are aged 19, 24 and 36. Emergency services took all three to hospital.

Two of the women sustained serious injuries and were treated as medical emergencies. One was wounded in the lower back and the other in the abdomen, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said after the cabinet meeting. Based on the information available to him at the time, none of the victims was in life-threatening condition. The third woman suffered less serious injuries. Authorities initially released no further details about her treatment.

According to the Paris Police Prefecture, the suspected attacker was arrested shortly after the incident. An off-duty prefecture officer stopped the man, while bystanders helped restrain him. Police cordoned off the area around the scene and collected evidence. The Porte de Clichy metro station was temporarily not served at midday. It initially remained unclear what further disruptions affected transport.

Only limited confirmed information about the arrested man was available by the evening. According to the interior minister, he gave an identity when arrested and made incoherent remarks. No conclusions can be drawn from this about his origin, personal background or a possible motive. The investigation must establish how the attack unfolded, whether the man knew the women and where the two knives came from.

Police and prosecutors opened an investigation. According to the AFP news agency, the national anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office was monitoring developments but had not taken over the case at that point. There was therefore initially no official confirmation of a terrorist motive. Investigators also provided no information about possible links between the suspect and the victims.

Paris Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire expressed his sympathy to the injured women and their relatives. He also thanked the off-duty police officer for intervening. Geoffroy Boulard, mayor of the 17th arrondissement, likewise praised the actions of the officer and the bystanders involved. The three women were still receiving medical care in the evening; no updated information on their condition was available.
