Death of Lyhanna: A State Failure?

Fleurance – 08.06.2026: On May 29, 2026, 11-year-old Lyhanna disappeared without a trace after leaving Collège Hubert-Reeves in Fleurance. One week later, on June 4, a child’s body was discovered near Puycasquier, about 15 kilometers south of Fleurance, in an agricultural silo. Investigators currently assume that it is Lyhanna, although the identification has not yet been officially confirmed.

Jérôme Barella, 41 years old and the main suspect in this case, was arrested shortly after the girl’s disappearance. On June 3, 2026, he was taken into pretrial detention for kidnapping and unlawful detention of a minor under 15 years old. Already in August 2025, a complaint had been filed against him for repeated sexual assaults on a then 12-year-old minor. However, this complaint was initially dropped due to a lack of further investigation.

The 12-year-old Rosa reported that she was a victim of assaults in the suspect’s house between September 2024 and May 2025. Despite the severity of these allegations, the complaint was not pursued further – a circumstance that has now sparked public outrage.

In recent days, the authorities received further complaints against Barella. On June 5, 2026, a mother from Saint-Brieuc filed a report after her approximately ten-year-old daughter recognized the man in a photo. Earlier in the year, the family had already filed a complaint for sexual assault against unknown persons, as the perpetrator could not be identified at that time.

These new complaints raise serious questions about the effectiveness of the investigations and the justice system’s handling of cases of child abuse. Many citizens criticize the failure of the authorities and demand a comprehensive review of all circumstances in the Lyhanna case.

The mourning over the girl’s death led to a remarkable public mourning march in Fleurance on June 7, 2026. About 6,000 people gathered dressed in white, carrying flowers and commemorating Lyhanna with candles and moments of silence. This show of solidarity has resonated nationwide and strengthened the call for more protection for children and a more decisive justice system.

The investigation into the exact circumstances of Lyhanna’s death continues. The justice system is under considerable pressure to quickly identify those responsible and hold them accountable. In the coming weeks, political authorities are also expected to introduce new measures to improve the handling of sexual violence against minors and to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
