Tour de France: the Johannessen twins sleep on the balcony after problems at the hotel

Aurillac – 14/07/2026: an image that does not match the prestigious format of the Tour de France: two mattresses are placed on the balcony of a hotel, under the open sky of the Cantal. Tobias Halland Johannessen and his twin brother Anders Halland Johannessen of Uno-X Mobility chose to leave their room for the fresh air during the night following the first rest day.

The trigger was images published by the Norwegians on social media. According to them, they showed a dirty floor, cobwebs and insects in the room. Anders Johannessen commented on the accommodation with dry humor, while Tobias later filmed the beds on the balcony. His assessment was as brief as it was clear: the inside was questionable, the outside significantly more pleasant.

The incident occurred at a time when recovery within the Tour peloton is almost as valuable as strength in the mountains. After nine stages and before the 10th stage on July 14, from Aurillac through the demanding terrain of the Cantal, riders need sleep, fluids and peace. The stage includes seven categorized climbs and also demands a lot from the domestiques, who must draw on every reserve for their leaders.

This rest is particularly important for Tobias Halland Johannessen. At 26, he is one of Uno-X Mobility‘s key riders for the general classification and had taken second place on the ninth stage on July 12. His brother Anders is also part of the Norwegian-Danish team’s selection. This unusual night was therefore not merely a curiosity, but a small disruption to the meticulously planned recovery of a Grand Tour.

Team accommodation is organized by organizer ASO during the Tour de France. Particularly in less well-served stage regions, the number of suitable hotels is limited; comfort and facilities can therefore vary greatly within the peloton. On the rest day, other teams also reported problems with absent or insufficient air conditioning during a period of high temperatures.

The Johannessen brothers did not turn their anger into a public scandal. Their videos instead showed a pragmatic response: mattresses outside, sleep masks on, view of the hills. The following afternoon, racing routine awaited them again. In the Cantal, it is not balconies that decide seconds and standings, but legs. The scene nevertheless illustrates how narrow the line between professional preparation and improvisation can be during three weeks of the Tour de France.
