A summer day in May — and suddenly it ends in tragedy. In Tourville-la-Rivière, near Rouen, on Wednesday a 38-year-old man drowned in Lac de Bédanne. The lake has been a popular meeting point for those seeking relief from the high temperatures for years. But swimming is prohibited right there.
According to initial information, the man was in an unsupervised area of the recreational area. Shortly after, he disappeared underwater. Rescue services arrived quickly after the emergency call, but all help came too late. The man could not be resuscitated.
The incident occurs during an unusually early heat wave in France. For days, temperatures have far exceeded the usual values for late May. Parks, riverbanks, and lakes fill up in many areas with people wanting to escape the stifling heat. It is precisely the unsupervised bodies of water that quickly attract attention — even though they often entail considerable risks.
And this is exactly where the problem lies.
Many of these lakes seem harmless. The water surface shines calmly in the sun, families sit on the banks, young people jump laughing into the water. But dangers are hidden beneath the surface that can surprise even experienced swimmers. Former gravel pits or artificial lakes often have steep slopes, sudden deep areas, or layers of cold water just a few meters below the surface. Those who dive in there quickly underestimate the power of nature.
Authorities have been warning for years against so-called wild bathing spots. Especially on hot days, the number of accidents increases significantly. Sometimes a circulation problem or cold shock is enough — and from a brief dive, a potentially deadly situation can arise within seconds. “It happens faster than people think,” rescuers often repeat. It sounds trivial, but unfortunately, it is the harsh daily reality.
The Lac de Bédanne is now well known in the region. Dangerous situations regularly occur there. Despite prohibition signs, the body of water attracts many visitors on hot days. Many obviously underestimate the danger or simply hope that nothing will happen. This very combination often ends tragically.
The investigations into the exact circumstances of the tragedy are still ongoing. For the man’s family, this matters little. For them, a warm day in May remains that suddenly changed everything.
