Funeral Procession in Fleurance: Thousands Commemorate Murdered Lyhanna

Fleurance – 06/07/2026: On June 7, 2026, about 6,000 people gathered in Fleurance, a small town in the Gers department, for a funeral procession to commemorate 11-year-old Lyhanna. The student had disappeared on May 29, 2026, after leaving the Collège Hubert-Reeves. Her body was discovered on June 4 in a grain silo near Puycasquier.

The procession began at 3 p.m., led by Lyhanna’s parents and brother. They carried a white flag bearing the inscription “Plus jamais ça!” (“Never again!”) and laid down T-shirts with the same phrase and a photo of their daughter in front of the Collège Hubert-Reeves.

The mayor of Fleurance, Grégory Bobbato, spoke after a moment of silence and emphasized the significance of the event: “There are moments when one must speak as mayor, as a resident of Fleurance, and as a human being.” He criticized societal failures that may have contributed to this tragic incident and stressed that such tragedies should not be regarded as isolated cases.

The main suspect, Jérôme Barella, continues to deny any involvement in Lyhanna’s death. After his arrest, he refused to make any statements to investigators and the judge. Lyhanna’s family and the people of Fleurance have repeatedly pointed to possible failures in handling previous complaints against the suspect.

The memorial event in Fleurance attracted not only local residents but also people from neighboring communities and regions. Participants wore white clothing and carried flowers to show their solidarity and respect. The event concluded with a moment of silence in which those present collectively honored the memory of the deceased Lyhanna.

Lyhanna’s tragedy has caused nationwide shock and raised questions about child safety and the effectiveness of judicial authorities. Officials have announced they will continue the investigation and review potential oversights to ensure such incidents are prevented in the future.

Additional memorial events and discussions are planned in the coming days to raise awareness about child safety and hold those responsible accountable. The community of Fleurance and Lyhanna’s family hope that the memory of the young student will lead to positive changes in society.

The events surrounding Lyhanna’s death have not only shaken the local community but also sparked nationwide debates about child protection and the responsibility of authorities. It is hoped that such tragedies can be prevented in the future and that society as a whole will learn from this incident.
