Paris expects tens of thousands of fans this Sunday for the official celebration of Paris Saint-Germain’s historic victory in the Champions League. At the Champ-de-Mars, at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, between 85,000 and 90,000 people are expected. Entry has been open since 2 p.m. PSG players want to present the European Cup on a specially constructed stage approximately 450 meters long.
The celebrations take place after a night of great enthusiasm but also considerable tensions. In Paris and other French cities, numerous riots occurred following the victory in the final. The Champs-Élysées and the surroundings of the Parc des Princes were particularly affected.
According to authorities, 780 people were arrested nationwide, of whom about 480 were in the Paris region. In addition, 57 members of the security forces were injured. The incidents included property damage, arson, looting, and the use of fireworks against police officers.
The Paris prosecutor’s office announced that 277 people, including 82 minors, were taken into police custody. They are accused, among other charges, of acts of violence, theft, and property damage.
The contrast between the sporting euphoria and the nighttime riots is evident. While PSG celebrates the greatest success in its history as a club, the joy of many supporters was overshadowed by the violence of a relatively small group.
Despite the incidents, the authorities are maintaining the official celebrations. For the events in Paris, an extensive security plan has been implemented. Around 22,000 police officers and gendarmes are deployed nationwide. Significant traffic and public transport restrictions are also in place around the Champ-de-Mars.
In addition to the celebration with the fans, a reception for the team is also planned at the Élysée Palace. The French capital thus hopes to honor the club’s sporting success in an orderly and festive setting.
